Aluminium fluoride is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula AlF3 prepared by the reaction of aluminium hydroxide or aluminium metal with hydrogen fluoride, or by the action of aluminium trichloride with hydrofluoric acid and ammonia. Colourless or white crystals. Insoluble in water and insoluble in acids and bases. Stable in nature, hydrolysable under heating. Used as an electrolyte conditioner and catalyst in the electrolysis of aluminium.
Aluminum fluoride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula AlF₃, which usually takes a colorless or white crystalline form. Its physical properties include high melting and boiling points, insoluble in water, but soluble in acidic solutions. Chemically, aluminum fluoride is highly corrosive and can react with many metals and non-metals as well as compounds. It has very high chemical stability.

There is no reaction when aluminum fluoride is co-heated with liquid ammonia or concentrated sulfuric acid or co-fused with potassium hydroxide. Not reduced by hydrogen, strong heat does not decompose but sublimate, the property is very stable. Heating to 300-400℃ can be partially decomposed into hydrogen fluoride and alumina by water vapor.
Aluminum Fluoride is widely used as an additive in the production of electrolytic aluminum. Used with cryolite, aluminum fluoride lowers the melting point to below 1000°C, forming a molten salt that dissolves in water. This molten solution is then electrolyzed to produce metallic aluminum.
